The Tonnelle Avenue Bridge & Utility Relocation Project is a critical early works component of the Hudson Tunnel Project that will reduce construction costs and traffic impacts.
Tonnelle Avenue is a highway in North Bergen, New Jersey that carries U.S. Routes 1 and 9 through Hudson County. The Tonnelle Avenue Project is removing the earth beneath the highway and building a bridge so that construction crews can access staging areas on both sides of Tonnelle Avenue without interrupting the flow of traffic on the highway.
This project will pave the way for building the New Jersey section of the new tunnel by creating the path for construction crews to bring the tunnel boring machines to their launch point at the base of the Palisades.
Once the new tunnel is in service, the bridge will enable trains to pass under Tonnelle Avenue as they travel into and out of the tunnel. Eliminating travel time delays and other negative impacts to local and visiting travelers that would result from construction vehicle traffic on Tonnelle Avenue.
