The Tonnelle Avenue Bridge & Utility Relocation Project was a critical early works component of the Hudson Tunnel Project that made tunnel construction and operation possible.
Tonnelle Avenue is a highway in North Bergen, New Jersey that carries U.S. Routes 1 and 9 through Hudson County.
The Tonnelle Avenue Project removed the earth beneath the highway and built a bridge so that construction crews can access staging areas on both sides of Tonnelle Avenue without interrupting the flow of traffic on the highway.
Completing this project created space under Tonnelle Avenue for the tunnel boring machines that will build the section of the tunnel under the Palisades in New Jersey to be assembled and launched.
Once the new tunnel is in service, the bridge will enable trains to pass under Tonnelle Avenue as they travel into and out of the tunnel.

Ground broke on the Tonnelle Avenue Project in November 2023, marking the start of Hudson Tunnel Project construction in New Jersey. The project was completed in 2026.
